Incredible 3A-5A state championship games

While everybody gripes about JM, can we appreciate how awesome the 5A, 4A, and. 3A championship games turned out, I attended the 5A game and it was bananas.

A great atmosphere with crazy momentum swings and runs and two very good teams. The crowd was bonkers by the start of the 4th. Then the ending. Electric. The way state title games should be.

MaxPreps actually said this in a Richmond Times article about JM

"The Justices (23-0) destroyed Prince Edward County (Farmville) 124-41 on Tuesday in the Region 2A quarterfinals. Coach Ty White’s team will next host Thomas Jefferson (12-11) in the region semifinals on Thursday. The winner of that game will play Brunswick or Greensville County in Friday’s region championship.
So long as John Marshall takes care of business and wins its third Class 2 championship in as many seasons, Divens said the Justices have a good chance to finish the season as the nation’s No. 1 high school basketball team."

As long as they wreck shop in 2A, they will remain # 1......

Also, this would be 3 out of 4 years. The only year they didn't win, they didn't play. (Covid)

Also, poor Prince Edward. I am sure JM didn't try to run it up. Just couldn't help it.

Predictions VHSL State Basketball Championships - Keys to Victory & Picks for Saturday's Title Games (3-11-23) in Class 5 & 2

The action in Friday's 2023 VHSL State Tournament brought some drama in the form of two major comebacks, an overtime finish and a few schools repeating.

Hopewell rallied from 17 down against Northside, went up by as many as four in the fourth quarter, but the Vikings prevailed to bring Coach Billy Pope his second state title in winning 58-52.

Carroll County's Girls repeated with a decisive 78-41 triumph over Brentsville District, where Alyssa Ervin nearly recorded a triple-double with 29 points, eight rebounds and eight steals.

Hayfield's also managed to repeat, running its win streak over Virginia foes to 59 as they held off Patriot in a defensive tussle, 52-41. It wasn't quite the clash between great offenses that we anticipated like their 75-73 win from back on December 1st, where Donovan Bass-Briscoe hit a runner to win the contest. However, Bass-Briscoe and David King each scored 14 points - with King also grabbing 10 boards - to lead the way for the Hawks on a night where each team made just one three-pointer.

It wasn't just a repeat in Class 6; it was a four-peat. Kirsten Stone's Madison squad led by 10 in the first quarter vs. Manchester, fell behind by seven with 4:22 to go in regulation, but managed to rally and win in OT, 49-46 thanks to an old-fashioned three-point play from Stella Gougoufkas late in the extra frame.
