Because kids are dying now. This bullshit toxic masculinity garbage a bunch of meathead jerkoffs spout off at kids is killing them. What happened at Maryland, even ignoring the fact they KILLED a kid, is 100% mental and physical abuse. It's not toughening them up, it's not making them bond, and if your thoughts are the opposite it's probably because you suffered abuse as a child and don't know any better.
This is why we MUST listen to kids at any level when any of this comes up and most importantly, this is why adults need to be damned adults and do the right thing, not hide in the corner like a coward because you're too scared of what doing the right thing will do to your career. These kids will not look out for themselves, that's why we still call them kids, it is up to the adults around them to do so. Don't be some asshole who thinks "hurr durr kids today are too soft", take what they say seriously and talk to people about it or that could be your child or grandchild in danger.
This stuff happens at all levels of play across all the country and there is no one common factor. Rich, poor, white, black, all kids are equally vulnerable to a staff like this and if you're lucky all they'll do is physically and mentally abuse your child and if you're unlucky, like these parents, you'll bury them.
